What is Wordle, how to win, and what is the solution today?

You are currently viewing What is Wordle, how to win, and what is the solution today?

Wordle has become an extremely popular game lately and has turned everyone’s Twitter timelines into rows and rows of green, yellow and gray grids. Here you will find advice on how to play it and the daily solution.

What is Wordle?

Wordle is a browser based simple word game in which players guess a five-letter word in six tries by using clues from their previous tries. Wordle presents the player with a five by six grid of empty boxes and a keyboard.

An empty Wordle grid, this is what the players sees before making any guesses.
An empty Wordle grid

The player enters a random five-letter word and then the game highlights the letters that are found in the mystery word, the letters that are correct and in the right position are highlighted with green, while the letters that are correct, but in the wrong position are highlighted in yellow. The letters that are not in the word at all are highlighted in gray. All the used letters are highlighted on the keyboard as well with the respective colors.

This is how the player sees a completely filled Wordle with the correct solution being ROBOT

The website only gives one word per day and everyone tries to guess the same word, so don’t share screenshots with your friends as that will probably spoil the fun for them. There is a built in sharing option for that, which only shows colored boxes which indicate how the player got to the correct guess. Yes, these are the annoying grids you keep seeing on Twitter lately.

The share option pops-up on its own after you finish the puzzle, but you can find it later in your statistics by clicking on the three bar icon in the upper right corner of the page.

The game can be found by clicking this link.

How to win in Wordle?

The internet, in its everlasting search for ad revenue has already produced millions of pages of advice on how to start your game. There are tips from puzzle experts, mathematical and statistical analyses and even algorithms that guess the word on their own already. What I can tell you is that for your opening word, you should use the letters most commonly used in the English language.

It should be vowel heavy like IRATE, AEGIS, AUDIO, JOULE, ADIEU etc.
It should contain some of the most commonly used consonants: S, R, H, T, N, D
The most common letter in the starting position in five letter words is S.
While the most common fifth letters in five letter words are E, Y, D and T.
The most common middle letters in five letter words are A, O, E and R.

The top ten most commonly used letters in the English language are: E, T, A, O, I, N, H, S, R, D; in that particular order. Notice that the only vowel not in the top ten is U.
You should never use a word with the letters X, Q and Z, as these are not often used.

When all these tips are taken into account ideal words to start your daily Wordle adventure are: SARED, SALET, TARES, LARES, SOARE, SAINE, RALES, CARES, RATES, SANER, TORES, REAIS, DARE.

Bear in mind that the final solution can have repeating letters and that the game uses American spelling. Also, the creator, Josh Wardle initially put 12.000 words into the game, however it was later determined that most of them are too ambiguous for the average player so the list was reduced to 2.500 words. So if you find yourself unable to decide which of the two words to use as your final answer, use the more common one.

And if you just can’t think of any word, you may use this word finder for Scrabble, or this tool made specifically for Wordle.

What have the Wordle results in 2022 been so far?

Unfortunately the official website doesn’t keep record of previous Wordles so it is up to us to do it. Well, for 2022 at least, the author of this article only started playing and keeping score recently. So if you happen to fail in guessing the today’s Wordle, or just want to cheat here is the list of every single answer in 2022:

On February 1, 2022 I have found the Wordle archive, so I will be slowly solving that as well 🙂

Update April 14, 2022: The devanghtakkar Wordle archive was taken down due to a request from NYT. Sadly, I will not be updating this list anymore.

all good things must end.
It has been a fun three months since I launched this archive and it brought joy to a lot of us but all good things must end. The New York Times has requested that I shut the archive down - to be honest, I was wondering what took them so long.To those of you who contributed to this open-source project, I thank you. To those of you who wrote to me, I thank you. To those of you who "requested" I take down the archive, I "thank" you.Cheers,
Devang
